Jessica Campbell, bassoon
Jessica Campbell is a doctoral candidate in bassoon performance at the University of Arizona. In 2007, she was a featured soloist with the The University of Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2006, she won the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant award for the School of Music. Jessica taught the bassoon studio at the University of Arizona in 2004 and performed as a member of the Arizona Wind Quintet during the fall semester
sabbatical leave of Dr. William Dietz. She currently serves as principal bassoon of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra. Jessica received the Bachelor of Music degree from Columbus State University in Georgia and the Master of Music degree from Florida State University.


Cynthia Ortiz, mezzo soprano
A native of Chicago, mezzo-soprano Cynthia Ortiz-Bartley has extensive operatic and symphonic experience with the Southern Arizona Symphony, Tucson Chamber Orchestra, Tucson Masterworks Chorale and Chicago's Da Corneto Opera. She currently sings with the Tucson Symphony Chorus, St. Paul's United Methodist Church as a staff singer, and teaches private voice. Cynthia has been a music teacher for the Music and Dance Academy of Tucson, Suzuki-Orff School in Chicago and has obtained Bachelor of Music in voice and Master of Education degrees from De Paul University, as well as a Master of Music in voice from Northwestern University.


Lucy Huestis, clarinet
In addition to playing principal clarinet with SASO for twenty years, Lucy has performed with the Arizona Opera Orchestra, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Southern Arizona Light Opera Company, Catalina Chamber Orchestra, Tucson Civic Orchestra, Arizona Symphonic Winds and many chamber groups. She has been a music teacher in Tucson Unified School District for over twenty-five years, teaching elementary, middle school and high school orchestra, band, guitar and mariachi. She and her husband, Richard Noriega, have two energetic boys – Thomas and James.


Drew Humphreys, tap artistAngeline Ng, piano
After studying and performing on three continents, Angeline Ng has made Tucson home. Born in Singapore, she studied music with her mother from early childhood. She earned Performer’s Diplomas in piano and violin from Trinity College of Music and The Royal Schools of Music before studying abroad. In England, she received a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance at Newbold College, and in California, a master’s degree at the University of Redlands. She has pursued a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Arizona, and has studied the Dorothy Taubman Technique in Baltimore. An active teacher, accompanist and chamber musician, Angeline performs regularly and is the Director of Music at Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior in Green Valley. Since first soloing in 1995 with SASO at Saddlebrooke, she has become a charming SASO tradition.


Adam Kerry Boyles, Music Director
Since he became Music Director of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra in August of 2005, Adam Boyles has energized musicians and audiences alike. In 2006, Adam participated in the Oregon Bach Festival, conducting and studying with Helmuth Rilling. Other guest conducting engagements include the Muncie Symphony Orchestra and the American Youth Symphony Orchestra. Adam received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he served three seasons as Music Director of the University Orchestra. As a Master’s student at the University of Arizona, Adam helped form the the UA Philharmonic, which he conducted and managed in its first two years. He also led the UA Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions in Tucson and on the 2002 Mexico tour.


Martin Majkut, Resident Conductor
Martin Majkut received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Choral Conducting in 1998 and a Masters of Music in 2000 at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava, finishing his degree with an “Excellence in Studying” Award. In 2000 he became the assistant conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic, the most prominent orchestra in Slovakia. Martin was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 2003 which enabled him to travel to the United States and become a member of the Orchestral Studies program at the University of Arizona School of Music. He is currently enrolled in the doctoral program and was honored with the “Distinguished Graduate Student” Award for outstanding academic achievement in 2005. Martin has performed with the UA Philharmonic, the Arizona Symphonic Orchestra and all the major orchestras in Slovakia. He is also an assistant conductor of the Arizona Opera.


Brian Asher Alhadeff is an internationally recognized operatic and symphonic conductor. Alhadeff holds a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has served as Music Director for the Chinese Cultural Center of San Francisco, Intimate Opera Company, Opera Pasadena, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Opera Theater, GVSU Musical Theater, GVSU Ballet, and California State University Los Angeles Opera Theater. Guest conducting engagements have included the Karlove Vary Sinfonie, UCLA Opera Program, New Valley Symphony, South Florida Opera Company, Eastern Sierra Symphony, Bourgas State Opera, and Long Beach Opera. Maestro Alhadeff is also the Artistic and Music Director of the Hradec Kralove International Summer Opera Festival that takes place in the Czech Republic in conjunction with the Eastern Bohemian Philharmonic and he also serves as the Associate Conductor of the Beverly Hills Symphony. He has also served on the vocal and conducting faculty for Symphonic Workshops LTD International Opera Workshop. As a university professor, Alhadeff has served on the faculty of UCLA, La Sierra University (Riverside, CA.), and Grand Valley State University (Grand Rapids, MI.). Upcoming engagements include Tulsa Ballet in November, and in December of this year, maestro Alhadeff will return to Tucson as Principal Conductor for Ballet Tucson’s performances of The Nutcracker.


Thomas Elefant was both a string player and brass player before turning to conducting at age 27. He received his masters degree in orchestral conducting from Indiana University. From 1985 to 1997, he served as Music Director and Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in Indiana. After moving to Israel, he conducted the Camerata Chamber Orchestra in Israel and on tour in Europe. In 2000, he founded the Inter-Generational Symphony Orchestra in Tel Aviv, which he led through 2006. He returned to the United States in 2007. Born in Santiago, Chile, he recently conducted the Orquesta de la Universidad de Santiago. He is proficient in Hebrew, Spanish and Hungarian. Elefant will conduct SASO’s second concert cycle on Nov. 11 at SaddleBrooke and Nov. 18 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The program features Nielsen’s “Helios Overture,” Weber’s “Concerto no. 1 for clarinet and orchestra” with soloist Lucy Huestis and Beethoven’s “Symphony no. 6."


Matthew Fritz is a recent graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where he received a degree in orchestral conducting under the direction of Neil Varon. A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Matthew studied conducting privately with Robert Moody and holds a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University in violin performance. While just at the beginning of his conducting experiences, Matthew has had the opportunity to guest conduct the Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra and the Cape Ann Symphony in Gloucester, MA. He has also conducted concerts with the Mendoza Symphony in Argentina, and worked with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra through the Eastman Summer Conducting Institute. Matthew’s upcoming engagements include concerts with the Quincy Symphony in Massachusetts and the Southern Arizona Symphony in Tucson, AZ. While at Eastman, Matthew was an active member of the NEO Chamber Orchestra both as conductor and violinist since it began in 2005. He served as music director of this unique organization for the 2006-2007 season. Matthew is passionate about sharing music with others, especially those who might not ordinarily be exposed to Classical music. Fritz will conduct SASO’s third concert cycle on Feb. 10, 2008 at SaddleBrooke and Feb. 17, 2008 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The program includes Mascagni’s Intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana,” Faure’s “Masques et bergamasques,” Strauss’ “Burlesque” with pianist Angeline Ng and Mozart’s “Symphony no. 26, Linz.”


Linus Lerner, a native of Brazil, has conducted orchestras, operas, choruses and instrumental groups at home, in the United States, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Spain. He served as associate conductor for The Opera in the Ozarks, Erueka Springs; the Tallahassee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tallhassee; and The University of Arizona Philharmonic. Guest conducting engagements have included The Brooklyn Opera Company, New York; the Orchestra Nacional de Valles, Spain; the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras of Porto Alegre, Brazil; The University of Colorado at Boulder Opera, Boulder; The International Opera Workshop in Karlove Vary and Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic; The International Opera Workshop in Plovdiv, Bulgaria; and as assistant conductor for the Arizona Opera. Lerner is a doctoral candidate in orchestral conducting at the University of Arizona where he led the UA symphony orchestra in numerous performances and operas in Tucson as well as on their 2002 Mexico tour. Lerner has a Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting from Florida State University where he was assistant conductor of the FSU leading the group in variou performances as well as the American premier of the opera /Procedura Penale/. He also has a Masters degree in Voice Performance from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelors Degree in Choral Conducting at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Lerner is music and executive director of Reveille Men's Chorus, leading the group in various concerts in the USA, Mexico, Brazil, and Canada. Upcoming conducting engagements include: Mexico City Chorus, Mexico; The Cochabamba Symphony Orchestra, Bolivia; and another engagement with The Symphony Orchestra of Porto Alegre, Brazil.
